Local libraries to hold flute concert

The Festive Flutes, a semiprofessional flute choir, will present a series of family and children’s programs at local libraries.
The program, entitled “A Celebration of Dances,” will feature early-classical dances by Baroque composers through modern-era folk dances.
The flutists will play minuets, gavottes and waltzes, as well as Spanish dances. Favorites such as the “Mexican Hat Dance” and “The Alley Cat” are part of the program to encourage audience participation, said Marjorie Koharski, Festive Flute founder and director.
Koharski, as flutemaster for the group, will lead performances such as the opening one at Wall Public Library, 7 p.m. tonight.
Recitals are offered 10:30 a.m. March 3 at the Neptune Library, 7:15 p.m. March 7 at the Howell Library, 11 a.m. March 10 at the Eastern Branch of the Monmouth County Library and 2 p.m. April 7 at the Marlboro Public Library.
A different program, featuring light classical music, show tunes and Irish music, is scheduled for 3 p.m. March 18 at the Howell Library.
All the library recitals are free, and registration is required through each library. The group’s members include Veronica Benjamin and Annette Lewis of Neptune, Ellie Cheung of Holmdel, Elyse Engravido of Hazlet, Alison LaRosa of Manasquan, Carolyn Mauer of the Port Monmouth section of Middletown, Kiera McKee and Christina Garces of Lakewood, Karen Milos of Toms River and Patricia Mumpower of Howell.
The group makes yearly performances at libraries and other locations. Recitals are each unique, in part because “membership changes over time,” Koharski said.
The flute choir features flutes such as the piccolo, C flutes and alto flutes. The group began 14 years ago and has grown to a semiprofessional choir that has performed throughout the state and on television. For more information, or to schedule a performance, call Koharski at (732) 922-2273.
