  Flutists celebrate Mozart's 250th birthday

This year, the Festive Flutes annual library program will feature but one artist - Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. In honor of the 250th anniversary of the Austrian composer’s birth, the flute choir will open tomorrow night’s performance with the overture “Queen of the Night” from the “Magic Flute.”

Founded 19 years ago by Neptune resident Marjorie Koharski, the Festive Flutes are comprised of students and adult flutists who perform classical works, show tunes and old standards.

“We started to perform 16 years ago in the libraries,” Koharski said. “It started as an educational tool for young people but then we found a lot of our shows were attended by senior citizens, so now we refer to the program as appropriate for all ages.”

While their past library programs have consisted of works by various artists, the show has always been themed. Over the years, their repertoire has included tributes to Americana, a tribute to American composers, Opera-tune-ity, a showcase of operatic tunes and Suite for the Sweets, comprised of suite music.

But this time around a dozen of Mozart’s arrangements will be played by a chorus that consists primarily of high school students.

“The chorus is open to anyone with advanced skills,” Koharski said. “We’ve had as many as 14 members at a time, but this year there will be six in the group.”

They include Koharski and high school students Caitlin Bogdan and Elizabeth Casper of Neptune, Jacqueline Calcagno and Stacy Daily of Hazlet and Megan Natoli of Freehold Township.

While residuals from winter colds and a collapsed lung plagued some members of the chorus at last Friday’s rehearsal, the girls were determined to continue on with rehearsals. All said they practice daily and are determined to master their parts.

Eighteen-year-old Stacy Daily, Hazlet, who was recovering from a collapsed lung, sat on a couch in Koharski living room going through the hand motions and playing the music in her head, while the other girls played.

“I’m waiting for the doctor’s OK,” she said. “I know I won’t be able to play in the first concert, but I hope to be ready for the second performance.”
Aside from the library programs, the flute choir performs at area churches, fund-raising and special events and at senior centers. Auditions are held in July, and adults and advanced high school students with good sight-reading ability are welcome to audition, Koharski said.

Six rehearsals are scheduled during August, two rehearsals in November for holiday music, and four rehearsals in January for the library series.

This year’s library tour will include tomorrow night’s 7 p.m. performance at the Wall Township Library, 7 p.m. Feb. 16 at the Neptune Public Library, 1 p.m. Feb. 25 at the Hazlet Township Library, 2 p.m. March 4 at the Holmdel Township Public Library, 2 p.m. at the Marlboro Library, 7 p.m. at the Point Pleasant Beach Library, 2 p.m. at the Ocean County Library in Manchester and 2 p.m. April 29 at the Brick Library.

Usually, one is told to keep quiet at the library, but this Sunday Spring Lake’s librarians actually invited in noise — the sound of flutes.

The Festive Flutes performed for an hour-long program that, according to Spring Lake Public Library Director Kateri Quinn, was “absolutely beautiful.”

She said she was “thrilled” with the night and said that the performance had “a nice finish.”

The flutists presented a varied repertoire, beginning with classical composers, such as Handel and Tchaikovsky, and moving later into popular Christmas tunes such as “Let it Snow” and “Jingle Bells.”

Founder and director of The Festive Flutes, Marjorie Koharski, said the audience was “very nice” and that the room in which the flutists performed, the Brown Room of the Spring Lake Memorial Community House, had a warm, Christmas feel.

Fifty to 60 people turned out to hear Ms. Koharski and the all-high-school aged group, who come from as far south as Toms River and as far north as Hazlet.

Ms. Quinn reported many attendees came up to her afterwards and thanked her for arranging the performance, and the next day, she began receiving phone calls — some with more thanks and some wondering when the next musical event will be.

The Festive Flutes is now in its 18th year. Current members are Caitlin Bogdan, Jacqueline Calcagno, Ron Campo, Elizabeth Casper, Stacy Daily and Megan Natoli. Its FluteMaster, Ms. Koharski, is a member of the Monmouth County Symphony Orchestra and many other music cooperatives. She teaches flute in her Neptune Studio.

The Festive Flutes, a semiprofessional flute choir, will present a series of family and children's programs at local libraries.

The program, entitled "A Celebration of Dances," will feature early-classical dances by Baroque composers through modern-era folk dances.

The flutists will play minuets, gavottes and waltzes, as well as Spanish dances.
Favorites such as the "Mexican Hat Dance" and "The Alley Cat" are part of the program to encourage audience participation, said Marjorie Koharski, Festive Flute founder and director.

Koharski, as flutemaster for the group, will lead performances such as the opening one at Wall Public Library, 7 p.m. tonight.

Recitals are offered 10:30 a.m. March 3 at the Neptune Library, 7:15 p.m. March 7 at the Howell Library, 11 a.m. March 10 at the Eastern Branch of the Monmouth County Library and 2 p.m. April 7 at the Marlboro Public Library.

A different program, featuring light classical music, show tunes and Irish music, is scheduled for 3 p.m. March 18 at the Howell Library.

All the library recitals are free, and registration is required through each library.
The group's members include Veronica Benjamin and Annette Lewis of Neptune, Ellie Cheung of Holmdel, Elyse Engravido of Hazlet, Alison LaRosa of Manasquan, Carolyn Mauer of the Port Monmouth section of Middletown, Kiera McKee and Christina Garces of Lakewood, Karen Milos of Toms River and Patricia Mumpower of Howell.

The group makes yearly performances at libraries and other locations. Recitals are each unique, in part because "membership changes over time," Koharski said.

The flute choir features flutes such as the piccolo, C flutes and alto flutes.
The group began 14 years ago and has grown to a semiprofessional choir that has performed throughout the state and on television. For more information, or to schedule a performance, call Koharski at (732) 922-2273.

Festive Flutes show spreads holiday spirit

Asbury Park Press
December 4, 1999
By Bonnie Delaney, Staff Writer

For those in need of a little holiday cheer, the Festive Flutes offer a program sure to get you in the spirit of the season.

The 10-member group kicks off its holiday season tomorrow with a free show at the Brick Cultural Arts Center at 521 Herbertsville Road (behind Havens Homestead) in Brick.

The hour-long show will begin at 7 p.m. and include such favorites as Tchaikovsky's "Nutcracker Suite,"

the "Christmas Overture," arranged by Holcombe, and Victor Herbert's "Toyland," along with popular Christmas tunes.

Other performances will be at 2 p.m. Dec. 11 at the Ocean County Library, 101 Washington St., Toms River, and at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 16 at Barnes and Noble book store, 44 Brick Plaza, Brick.

"It's a great way to get into the holiday spirit," said Marjorie Koharski, of Neptune, who started the group 13 years ago and serves as its director.

"Flute choirs are becoming popular, but we're still unique to the area," Koharski said.

"People seem to like the light and mellow tones of the instrument," she said. "I do, too."

Though she has been playing the flute since childhood, Koharski's first instrument was not a flute, but a violin. Her father, Forest Walter, was a professional violinist, and brought up a musical family, she said.

"But there were a few orchestras around to perform in while I was growing up, so I switched to the flute so I could play in bands and orchestras," she said.

Koharski, who also plays the piccolo, performs with the Monmouth Symphony and teaches violin.

During the spring and autumn, the Festive Flutes feature programs of light classical music, along with show tunes and old favorites.

At the show last year, the group features selections from "The Sound of Music" and Gilbert and Sullivan operettas.

The flute choir includes musicians who play the piccolo, C flutes and alto flutes.

Other members include Veronica Benjamin, Neptune; Nancy Bierbrauer, Brick; Bianca Campo, Long Branch; Ellie Cheung, Holmdel; Michele Horner and Patricia Mumpower, both of Howell; Alison LaRosa, Manasquan; Carolyn Mauer, Middletown, and Dana Macedo, of Tinton Falls.

Festive Flutes to liven up Wall Library
The Wall Herald
January 28, 1999
Travis Cunningham - Managing Editor

The melodies and harmonies of many nations will fill the air at the Wall Township Library on Thursday, Feb. 25, as The Festive Flutes, a semi-professional flute choir, take the stage. The Festive Flutes are in their 12th year of performing throughout New Jersey, and their performance at the Wall Library is part of their ninth year of presenting annual recitals for young audiences during the winter and early spring.

The Festive Flutes director, Marjorie Koharski of Neptune, said the idea for the flute choir grew as a logical extension of the flute lessons she teaches. "I started with pupils from my flute classes", said Koharski. "One girl's mom played the piano and accompanied us. When we started, we played organizations that my students' moms belonged to, like women's clubs".

After a while, Koharski began to hold auditions for the group, adding some adults - many of whom had been music majors - to the flute choir. The Festive Flutes "gives adults a place to play", said Koharski, allowing them to "keep up their musical skills".

Over the years, The Festive Flutes have become well known in the area. Highlights of the flute choir's 12 years of performing include an appearance at Drew University's first annual Flute Choir Festival, and being featured on News 12 New Jersey.

The Festive Flutes current lineup includes Jamie Arasz Prioli and Cyndie VanBavel, Ocean Township; Veronica Benjamin, Neptune; Nancy Bierbrauer and Janet Rollar, Brick; Ellie Cheung, Holmdel; and Michelle Horner, Howell.

At the performance at Wall Library, The Festive Flutes will present "A Musical Journey" featuring music of various countries and composers. The Irish Londonderry Air, Japanese Sakura, French Allouette, The Mexican Hat Dance, and works by Grieg, Tchaikovsky and (Koharski's favorite) Bach will be featured.

In addition to the library performance, The Festive Flutes will perform a closed recital for the residents of The Arbors in Spring Lake Heights as part of their senior residence program in March.

Asked about the rewards of playing for the community, Koharski responded, "We feel we have something that can bring pleasure into their lives".

The Festive Flutes performance at the Wall Township Public Library, Allaire and Bailey's Corner Road, is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 25, at 7 p.m. Call the library at 449-5995 for more information.
